My book of Prince essays, Prince and Little Weird Black Boy Gods, comes out in print next week (November 6). One of the items in it is a handy list for people who want to see why Prince was such a big deal is but don’t want to plow through 40-plus albums to figure it out. I have a number of dream playlists in the book, but this one is pretty much the Prince cheat code. Now that he’s no longer with us much of his catalog has become legally available online. I’ve made a YouTube playlist to celebrate the release of the book, but more, to celebrate the legacy of this phenomenal and unique musician. Also, it’s chronological, so you can get a solid feel for how his sound, abilities and interests changed over the years, in “real” time!
